Every pregnancy is very different and has a unique story, and also varies from mother to mother, so doctors suggest different types of ultrasound scans during pregnancy checkup to monitor the baby’s development and growth in the womb; in this scenario doctor may suggest the early tiffa scan to some mothers to monitor the baby overall development.
What is Early Tiffa Scan??
An Early TIFFA Scan refers to a comprehensive ultrasound assessment of the fetus at the first trimester ISUOG (International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology) recommends an Early TIFFA Scan can establish gestational age, assess fetal anatomy, evaluate the placenta and uterus, and, when appropriate, assess markers associated with chromosomal abnormalities.
What Is the Difference Between an Early TIFFA Scan and a Normal TIFFA Scan?
This is one of the most important things for parents to understand. The major difference is timing and the level of anatomical development that can be assessed.
*Main purpose of Early TIFFA Detailed Scan:
Early assessment of fetal anatomy
Dating the pregnancy
Looking for some major structural abnormalities
Assessing placenta and other pregnancy structures
Does an Early TIFFA Replace the Normal TIFFA?
This is a very crucial point an early TIFFA does not rule out the need for a later anatomy scan. The fetus is still growing, and some anatomical structures are better seen as the pregnancy progresses. Certain abnormalities can occur that may not be noticed during the first trimester or may come up later.
ISUOG specifically stated that many structural abnormalities may occur later or may not be able to be detected even with the right equipment and examination. Therefore, the two scans should be seen as two separate examinations.
What Is Checked During an Early TIFFA Scan?
1. Baby's Size and Gestational Age:
In the early tiffa scan doctor checks whether the baby is a normal size for the first stage of pregnancy. A measurement known as the Crown Rump Length (CRL).
2. Head and Brain:
The doctor particularly examines the baby's head and looks for the overall development of the brain by observing the shape of the skull. By analysing the skull/shape of the baby’s head the doctor is able to get to know how the things are going.
3. Face:
The doctor examines the face, which is beginning to take shape. Some facial features can also be seen here.
4. Spine:
In this section The doctor observes the spine from different angles to ensure that it is straight and has a normal shape.
5. Abdomen:
The abdomen shows the general shape of the stomach, abdominal wall and bladder - depending on how far the pregnancy has progressed.
6. Arms and Legs:
The doctor checks that the baby's arms, legs, hands and feet are developing normally and that the basic building blocks of each limb are correctly formed or not.
7. Placenta and Umbilical Cord:
The doctor monitors the placenta within the womb for normal location and appearance, and looks at the umbilical cord and its attachment to the mother and baby.
What About Chromosomal Conditions?
The early tiffa scan is also used in the screening process for certain chromosomal abnormalities. For instance, it is possible to carry out the NT test if there is an appropriate gestation. It should also be noted that measurements of the translucency as well as any other ultrasound results are screening tools, rather than a diagnostic test for chromosomal abnormalities.
Depending on the patient’s situation and screening strategy, the doctor might recommend cell-free DNA screening or other diagnostic tests.
Conclusion:
If your doctor recommends an Early TIFFA Scan, not to worry. It is just a chance to see how your baby is developing in their earliest stages, and work out if there is anything that needs closer monitoring. Your doctor can also speak to you about if it's right to have other screening or follow up scans for your situation.
